(February 11, 2008- TROY)- Mayor Harry J Tutunjian, as well as representatives of State, County, and City government will join with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Tuesday morning at 11:30 a.m. to announce a state- of-the-art facility that will house more than 300 students in downtown Troy.
The groundbreaking will take place at the former Best Western Rensselaer Inn, located at 1800 Sixth Ave., Troy, N.Y.
The new residence hall, which is expected to be ready for occupancy in August 2009, will be situated at the bottom of the Rensselaer Approach — the granite staircase built by the City of Troy to symbolize its connection to the Institute. The scope of the project will involve a complete renovation, modernization, and upgrading of the existing building and systems.
"This is the type of exciting project that is putting the City of Troy on the map around the country," Tutunjian said. "The change from the Best Western Hotel into state-of-the-art student housing in the heart of downtown Troy is the finest example of integrating student life into the City of Troy in many years. I am thrilled with the support this project has received from around the community, and look forward to the positive impact it will have on Troy."
